$859.75 for oil change, brake fluid replacement, drive belt, & inspection seems steep to me! I know prices everywhere for everything are sky high, but I looked up the typical cost for these services in the Bay Area and Sunnyvale Foreign Car Service charges are outside of the highest of the range. I’m new to the area and was hoping to find a mechanic that I could trust and that wouldn’t rip me off. My Dad highly and happily recommended “Matt the Mechanic” as the most trustworthy, honest mechanic he knows. I think I may have found a trustworthy mechanic, in that I think they’re competent and most likely did the appropriate repairs correctly, but I definitely feel like I was ripped off. I made an appt for a multi-point comprehensive inspection, oil change, and cruise control repair. I never spoke with Matt, but the rest of the team was friendly and the free shuttle service was appreciated. The comprehensive, multi-point inspection I received ended up being EXACTLY the SAME as the COMPLIMENTARY inspection I get from Nissan when I get an oil change, (except for one thing: inspecting the wheel bearings) Sunnyvale Foreign Car Service charged me $96.54 for the inspection as well as $132.27 for synthetic oil change, (which is on the high side for the typical charge in this area). Then I received a quote of $1,200 - $2,000 to repair the cruise control. The mechanic wasn’t sure what needed to be done because he would have to remove the steering wheel to diagnose and yet I was charged $118 just for this information! I objected and that charge was removed. I was charged $358.43 for changing the brake fluid, but since they weren’t able to remove one of the bleeder screws, they were only able to do 75% of the service, but still charged me in full, (typical charge for this service in Bay Area is $150-$300, so $358.43 exceeds that range). They quoted me $85 labor & $65 for the filter to change my cabin filter! I buy TWO cabin filters for $13 and it takes me LESS than 10 minutes to change. I’m sure it’s less for them, so why would they change $150 for that? (Especially since they have to get to the filter to inspect it, so swapping out a new one would be a cinch). Also, my brother got a quote from Sunnyvale Foreign Car for an alignment that was double what his regular mechanic charges. So, do I recommend Sunnyvale Foreign Car Service Inc? Only if you don’t mind paying more. Will I return? Probably not.
